Mental Wellness with Spirituality, Therapy, and/or Meditation

Pedro Garcia

This year has been one of the most challenging years on record for people with mental illness. Each year, one of five people in the United States has a mental illness. According to the Henry Kaiser Foundation, symptoms of anxiety and depression have increased by 40% from May to July of this year. Our church family is no exception to these trends, but they are often hidden because of stigmas. As a senior minister in the Los Angeles church, I want to highlight mental wellness with spirituality, therapy, and meditation. Jesus gave us hope and a purpose to be the light of the world, and the church should be a stronghold for healing, peace, and growth for our members and the communities where we live. I will discuss practical steps that can be taken to make this a reality.

Fantasy and Desire: Moving Through Brokenness to Sexual Healing

Compassion Fatigue and Ministry Burnout (For Ministry Staff and Elders)

Mike Shapiro

Compassion fatigue is a term first coined in the 1950s to refer to the stress and mental exhaustion experienced by persons in the “helping professions” as a result of sacrificing their own physical and emotional wellbeing to help others. Just like people in the medical and mental health professions, ministry leaders are susceptible to burnout and compassion fatigue because they have been trained to “pour themselves out” in the interest of helping those who are needy and, at times, demanding. In this class, Dr. Michael Shapiro will outline the components of compassion fatigue, describe the “burnout-prone personality,” and use biblical principles to give advice on self-care and fatigue mitigation so that ministry leaders will be better prepared for lifelong spiritual leadership.

Rewired: The Brain Science of Sexual Purity

Dr. Marcus DeCarvalho

In Dr. De Carvalho’s talk, he illustrates how the brain becomes “rewired” and ultimately “hijacked” after repetitive acts of impurity. This “rewiring” is so intense, the brain believes it needs pornography to survive in the same way it needs basic things, such as food and sleep. He will also show how repetitive acts of impurity inevitably cause the brain to believe that it needs them in order to survive. In this way, the individual becomes “stuck” in their addiction and the brain is “hijacked”. Dr. De Carvalho also introduces hope, and the ability to overcome this “hijacking” of the brain by utilizing the concept of neural plasticity. Finally, he teaches that discipleship and true discipling relationships are the only ways we can truly overcome and maintain long-term spirituality and sobriety.

Victories from the Front

Tom Nuelle

Often when we read the Bible we experience a chasm between the ideal and the real. We feel our hearts being stirred by God’s promises of what could be but we find our reality does not match our hope. In the world of sexual purity, this is a common conundrum. This class will look at real stories of real people in our fellowship whose lives have been transformed through God’s power and goodness. We will examine the key spiritual insights, epiphanies, and personal changes that unlocked the door to God’s amazing favor in sexual purity.

Equipping Kids to Avoid Sexual Hazards

Barry and Debbie Mattox

Foundational is recognizing that God’s design for sex in marriage is a wonderful, powerful gift to be treasured and protected. Too often, sex is presented in a negative way or is not talked about at all. Understanding the positive value and power of sex in marriage and the permanent damage that occurs with immoral practices give us the incentive to strive for sexual purity.

Following that, we will look at ways to help women to overcome the battles they face! This also will be a helpful class for those that want to be equipped in helping others who struggle in their sexual relationship with their husband. Please join us as we journey into the fullness God desired for women in the bedroom.

Carrying One Another’s Burdens: Cultural Humility Training in the Local Church

Kendall Knight and Bob Keen

Our fellowship of churches has become more multicultural, but there are influences from our dominant culture that are at work within the fellowship attempting to divide us. This series of discussions will help our leaders and members become more conscious of how these forces attempt to divide us.

Our series includes a limited number of discussions within a small group in a safe, trusting environment that promotes openness on racial issues, leading to authentic dialogue, in the hopes that leaders and members will then internalize these discussions and engage on a personal quest to grow and transform their lives and ministry, embracing deep, personal cross-cultural relationships where all brothers and sisters feel safe and truly equal.

Being Curious

David Jung

As we go about our daily lives, there will inevitably come a time when someone will do something that will not work for us and cause us to get upset. When we have such vast differences among personalities, experiences, and preferences, it can create opportunities for many conflicts. When conflict is handled in a healthy way, it can be a catalyst for great growth and connection. When conflict is handled poorly, it can lead to unhealthy communities and broken relationships.

As disciples of Jesus, we are called to do everything in our power to bring peace in a healthy way to the relationships around us. One way to help with this process is to remain curious in challenging situations instead of jumping to conclusions. Our time together will include looking at our own approach to conflict and our responses when we experience relational tension.

You will have a chance to look at a personal conflict example in your life using some tools that will be presented in the workshop. Hopefully, our work together will give you more insight into a healthy resolution of your situation. We look forward to "Being Curious" together.

Dealing with Depression

Gregg Marutzky

Depression is an epidemic problem in society today. The burdens, stresses, and concerns for so many are overwhelming. Many need assistance to process emotions and work through triggers of discouragement and depression. Experts can provide the tools and assistance to understand ourselves and the methods for dealing with seemingly uncontrollable feelings. Combining professional tools along with spiritual practices multiplies the opportunity for wellness.

The chains of depression can be broken by the healing power of understanding, truth, and divine spirit.  This workshop will examine depression from many angles to give hope for overcoming this serious, often immobilizing problem.

Stronger in Grace: The Unexpected Path to Sexual Purity

Dave and Robin Weidner

What helps men, women, and marriages run free? Shame or grace? Recent studies have shown that shame multiplies our temptation and drives our struggles underground. Grace allows the roots of our struggles to be exposed, forming a whole new narrative. Together, let’s break through our own expectations, fears, and outdated ministry paradigms to find a “stronger in grace” path to freedom.

Betrayal and Grace: How Leaders and Laymen Can Support the Victims of Sexual Sin

Kim Pullen

Just as it plagued the first-century church, unrepentant sexual sin is cancer eating away at the underbelly of many of today’s small church groups and disciple families. What is Satan’s biggest ploy? Keep disciples of Jesus—leaders and laymen—ignorant and naïve to the signs, symptoms, and sweeping devastation of sexual betrayal in the lives of ALL the victims.

Kim Pullen shares how a mature disciple can discern the symptoms of sexual sin in marriage, address it with love, grace, and deep convictions, and biblically support those who are directly and indirectly impacted by it.

For Campus & Young Professionals: Helping your LGBTQ+ Friends

Sean Cutting and Morgan Roberts

There is no demographic that faces the reality of the gay agenda more. Sean & Morgan share strategies on how Christians can share the good news of Christ with their gay friends, neighbors, and family members in a loving and compassionate manner that does not lower the biblical sexual ethic.

It will also cover developing healthy connections, studying the Bible and helping disciples from this background, and how to help when people are not yet ready for help. If you, or someone you love, struggles with addiction, or you are interested in starting up a CR ministry in your congregation, then this is a must-see class!

Love for All God’s People: Developing a local diversity team in your church - SCUAD

Chris Jacobs and Dana Perkins

For Christ himself has brought peace to us. He united Jews and Gentiles into one people when, in his own body on the cross, he broke down the wall of hostility that separated us. Ephesians 2:14 NLT

As disciples we are deeply grateful God built our fellowship to be multiracial and multicultural in 711 churches in 150 countries around the world. With diversity comes the need to understand and celebrate our differences in a way that allows the church to be salt and light to the world. This session will consider the benefits of implementing a Social Cultural Unity and Diversity Team (SCUAD) in the local church and discuss best practices.

A Light for the Nations: A Practical Theology of Jesus’ Call to Gather the Nations

Dr Richard Rodriguez and Robert Carrillo

We are currently experiencing social challenges that are overwhelming our nation and the globe. In this class, we shall examine His radical perspective and solutions for global issues concerning race, poverty, and justice today.

A Better Approach to Conflict

Tim Baigent

It is all around us big and small... conflict. In this class, we will bring some understanding to why we have conflict. It is normal and natural and we will try to demystify where it comes from. Lastly, we will dig our teeth into a tool that we can use to de-escalate conflict moving forward.

TRANSITION TIME - 5:00 - 5:30 PM

Speed Fellowshipping and Expo open.

CLOSING BIBLE STUDY: Praying Through Clenched Teeth - 5:30 - 6:30 PM

Dr. Bill Moulden

Have you been there? You know in your mind that God reigns and is sovereign over all. You believe that He exists and knows what is happening to you and those around you. So you pray but over time the line between belief and bitterness has grown thin. You need a word. You need a message of good news. You need reassurance that God is up to something. You need the book of Revelation. This lesson is designed to provide dignity, hope, and encouragement to those who faithfully hold to their confession and pray, even if it is through clenched teeth.
